A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy (30:15-20)

Moses said to the people:
“Today I have set before you
life and prosperity, death and doom.

If you obey the commandments of the LORD, your God,
which I enjoin on you today,
loving him, and walking in his ways,
and keeping his commandments, statutes and decrees,
you will live and grow numerous,
and the LORD, your God,
will bless you in the land you are entering to occupy.
If, however, you turn away your hearts and will not listen,
but are led astray and adore and serve other gods,
I tell you now that you will certainly perish;
you will not have a long life
on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and occupy.
I call heaven and earth today to witness against you:
I have set before you life and death,
the blessing and the curse.
Choose life, then,

that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD, your God,
heeding his voice, and holding fast to him.

For that will mean life for you,
a long life for you to live on the land that the LORD swore
he would give to your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
Reflect: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Our God, through Moses, encourages us to choose life. In today’s Gospel (Luke 9), that point is amplified when Jesus tells the disciples that anyone who wants to have life in him, “must deny himself and take up his cross daily.” Why? Because as believers we know that the cross means life; victory over sin and death. As we begin the Lenten journey, we can ask ourselves: In what ways am I running away from Jesus; from the fullness of life? He desires nothing more than to bless our lives lavishly, but he asks that we imitate him and follow him so that our hearts get right with God; that our wants diminish so that his ways, his love, his call to serve might take hold and flourish. Let us choose life, then!

In what ways might self-centeredness be keeping me from fully giving myself over to Jesus and his ways? How am I failing to choose life and the cross of Christ? Is there a particular sin that nags at me and interferes with my relationship with Jesus? Can I give that over to him during this Lent?

Pray: Loving God, you alone are my strength, my peace and my hope. Help me to be fearless in taking up your cross against my own sinfulness so that I might experience the fullness of life in you.  I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned! (Psalm 51)
