Matthew 13:13-17

This is why I speak to them in parables, because
they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.
Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:

You shall indeed hear but not understand,
you shall indeed look but never see.
Gross is the heart of this people,
they will hardly hear with their ears,
they have closed their eyes,
lest they see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their hearts and be converted
and I heal them.

“But blessed are your eyes, because they see,
and your ears, because they hear.
Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people
longed to see what you see but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

Reflect: How blessed we are! Jesus is gracing us to understand his word.  He provides the grace for us to see with spiritual eyes and to hear with spiritual ears.  That is so important to us in the midst of a world that attempts to persuade with apparently logical and enlightened words. We desperately need the grace of God to discern what is true and what will genuinely lead us to him and his ways.  It is important to recognize that we are spiritually blind and deaf to God’s ways so we need healing. What activities, ideas, relationships, literature and entertainment do I engage in that can desensitize me to the Word of God and to the voice of God? Do I ask God for healing and forgiveness when I recognize that I’m making choices that lead me away from him?

Pray: Loving God, I want to hear and understand the fullness of your word.  I want to see and put into action the truth of your ways. Forgive me for making bad choices that lead me away from you. Heal me and fill me with the grace I need to walk as a true and faithful disciple in this world. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
