Matthew 13:36-43

Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house.
His disciples approached him and said,
“Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man,
the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom.

The weeds are the children of the Evil One,
and the enemy who sows them is the Devil.
The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire,
so will it be at the end of the age.
The Son of Man will send his angels,
and they will collect out of his Kingdom
all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.
They will throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
Then the righteous will shine like the sun
in the Kingdom of their Father.
Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

Reflect: Today the Church celebrates the grandparents of Jesus, Saints Joachim and Anne. These parents of Mary persevered in prayer asking God to bless them with a child. But that perseverance of faith continued after they conceived Mary, and the good seed, manifest in their love and faithfulness to one another, bore amazing fruit. Mary received an example of faith through her parents – this witness became the foundation for Mary’s fiat through which Jesus was born.  God continues to sow good seed in the field of the world – he calls each of us to give witness to the truth of his love and mercy. Do I recognize the power of the heritage that comes to me through my life in Jesus?  Do I intentionally choose to persevere in faith and to make God’s way known in the world?

Pray: Loving God, thank you for the marvelous gift of life! Thank you for using me as a good seed for the world. Help me to grow to give witness to you, to the life of Jesus. Give me the grace to renounce sin and to choose your ways over and over again. May I rejoice in you, my heritage; and may my life give you glory and honor at all times. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
