Matthew 18:12-14

“What is your opinion?
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray,
will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills
and go in search of the stray?

And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it
than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.
In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father
that one of these little ones be lost
.”

Reflect: Really?  If someone has the responsibility of shepherding 100 sheep and one wanders away, then that person will leave the 99 in search of the one?  It looks like irresponsibility. But that is the point: Jesus’ love and mercy is so intense, so focused on each one of us that he treats us as if we are the only ones in the flock. “It is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.” The love God has for us is so unique that it smacks of being absurd and ridiculous.  We can understand that love only when we are humble and trusting like a little child who is certain that he or she will be provided for and cared for – no matter what!  Jesus wants us to be in the flock. He wants us to be safe under his watchful and caring eye.  May we never underestimate the mercy of God. He will do anything to bring us home – even death on the cross.

Am I trying to hide from God? Do I need to ask God for a childlike humble heart so that I can experience the immensity of his love for me?

Pray: Loving God, please give me a humble heart that is disposed to let you love me. Help me to stop trying to run away from you and your love for me. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
