Matthew 23:23-26

Jesus said:
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You pay tithes on mint and herbs and seeds,
and have neglected the weightier things of the law:
judgment and mercy and fidelity.
But these you should have done, without neglecting the others.
Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You cleanse the outside of cup and dish,
but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.
Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup,
so that the outside also may be clean.”

Reflect: Jesus speaks harshly to the scribes and Pharisees to call them out for doing the right things for the wrong reasons. They are overly-focused on the externals so as to appear to be perfect in obeying the law of God, meanwhile their hearts are far from God. The challenge for us, also, is to be motivated to do the right things for the right reasons. An appearance of holiness doesn’t go very far if my heart isn’t intimately entwined with the heart of Christ. Being held in high esteem by other believers is empty if we aren’t genuinely reflecting the presence of God in what we do and say. Ultimately, it’s God’s creation, God’s Kingdom; that is what we are called to seek and bring to others – not for our sake, honor or glory, but always and only for that of Christ’s.

Do I seek God with all of my heart, mind and soul in all that I do?  What are my motivations to live out my faith?  Am I doing the right things for the right reasons?

Pray: Loving God, purify my heart and mind so that I can seek you genuinely and sincerely with all that I have. May I have the grace to bring you honor, glory and praise with all of my words and actions today and every day. I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
