Luke 8:19-21

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him
but were unable to join him because of the crowd.
He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside
and they wish to see you.”
He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers
are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

Reflect: We rejoice to know that through baptism we are welcomed into the Church and made part of the family of Christ.  In a simple phrase from today’s gospel reading, however, Jesus reminds us that in order to sustain our relationship with him something more is required: we must “hear the word of God and act on it”. When we hear the scripture proclaimed at Mass, or when we pick up the bible to read the Word of God do we let that word penetrate our heart and mind so that it makes a difference about how we live?  Jesus wants us to be counted among his mother, brothers and sisters.  To be part of Jesus’ family we need to be attentive to his word so that our lives are conformed to him. The Word of God should shake us up and have an impact on the choices we make in the small things as well as the big issues that we face in life.  The Korean Martyrs that we remember today gave their lives because the Word of God compelled them to bring the Holy Eucharist to 19th century Korea and evangelize the people there. St. John Paul II canonized Andrew, Paul and their 101 companion martyrs in 1984.

Do I seek to meditate on the Word of God?  Do I desire to live the Word of God no matter the cost to my personal or professional life?

Pray: Loving God, may your Word be a lamp to my feet to guide and direct everything I do. Give me the courage to meditate on your Word and to put it into practice.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saints Andrew Kim, Paul Chong and all the Korean Martyrs: Pray for us!
