The Letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians 5:1-6

Brothers and sisters:
For freedom Christ set us free;
so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

It is I, Paul, who am telling you
that if you have yourselves circumcised,
Christ will be of no benefit to you.
Once again I declare to every man who has himself circumcised
that he is bound to observe the entire law.
You are separated from Christ,
you who are trying to be justified by law;
you have fallen from grace.
For through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness.
For in Christ Jesus,
neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything,
but only faith working through love.

Reflect: We continue to hear Paul’s discourse to the Galatians about true freedom. He proceeds by showing that we can find ourselves enslaved by the law. The law leads to freedom only if it is embraced for the right reasons; the law itself does not lead us to salvation.  Rather, our faith inspired by love is what really counts. Jesus calls us into a relationship of trust; trust based on love. So Jesus asks us to respond to him, to trust him out of love. Saint John XXIII had this to say about his own relationship with Jesus, “I live by the mercy of Jesus to whom I owe everything and from whom I expect everything.”

Do I truly trust Jesus in all things or do I pick and choose what I turn over to him?  Is my faith based in a love response to Jesus who loved me first, or do I expect that I’ll be saved because I follow the law without love? Do I live by the mercy of Jesus to whom I owe everything and from whom I expect everything?

Pray: Loving God, you love me not because I deserve your love but because your generous mercy cannot be contained. Help me to put all my trust in you and expect everything from you.  I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint John XXII: Pray for us!
