A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (3:31-35)

The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house.
Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him.
A crowd seated around him told him,
“Your mother and your brothers and your sisters
are outside asking for you.”
But he said to them in reply,
“Who are my mother and my brothers?”
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.

For whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother.”

Reflect: Your will be done. Jesus uses the opportunity of having his mother and relatives wanting to visit him to teach about the bond that truly unites – not blood, but those who seek to do the will of the Father. Even the first reading today from the Book of Hebrews (chapter 10) reinforces this instruction: “Behold, I come to do your will.” Saint Frances de Sales, whose memorial we celebrate today, also writes about this theme: “In short, for God’s glory yield to his will completely and never suppose that you could be serving him better in any other way; the best way to serve him is to fall in with his will for us.” We can easily fall into the pattern of fulfilling our “obligations” while resisting to abandon ourselves to the will of God – especially when he asks something of us that we struggle to let go of. May God give us the grace to trust in the will of the One who knows us and knows what is best for us infinitely more than we can imagine.

What are the biggest obstacles for me to accept the will of God in my life? How is God asking something of me today that I can try to let go of for his honor and glory?

Pray: Loving God, give me the courage and strength to trust in your holy and perfect will. Especially help me to let go of a spirit of resistance to your will. I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint Frances de Sales: Pray for us!
