A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews (12:1-4)

Brothers and sisters:
Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us
and persevere in running the race that lies before us
while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus,
the leader and perfecter of faith.

For the sake of the joy that lay before him
Jesus endured the cross, despising its shame,
and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.
Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners,
in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.

In your struggle against sin
you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.
Reflect: Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Left to our own devices, we would be desperately challenged to persevere especially in the midst of opposition and negativity. Jesus showed us how to “not grow weary and lose heart.” The pressures of everyday life as well as the extraordinary pressures that all of us experience from time to time can easily wear us down. If Jesus is our foundation and we keep our eyes on him, he will provide the strength we need to stay faithful until the end. Saint John Bosco saw the need to respond to poor young people. He invited them to Mass and created activities and training programs. He provided shelter for six homeless boys; within five years, he was able to offer hospitality to 600 young men. People said it couldn’t be done. May God give us the grace to keep our eyes fixed on him no matter the circumstances of our lives or the challenges in the world around us.

What pressures are challenging me today to possibly lose heart? Can I ask God to renew me in strength and to fix my eyes on his love and promises to get me through these difficult times?

Pray: Loving God, I feel myself tossed and turned and pulled in many directions. Help me to ground myself in you and your ways. Take the thoughts away that distract me from you; and help me to always keep my eyes fixed on you. I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint John Bosco: Pray for us!
