A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (10:28-31)

Peter began to say to Jesus,
‘We have given up everything and followed you.”

Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you,
there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or children or lands
for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel
who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age:
houses and brothers and sisters
and mothers and children and lands,
with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.
But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

Reflect: We have given up everything and followed you. Why did the apostles do that? Did they give up everything and follow Jesus because it was going to increase their esteem before others; or enhance their status among fishermen, carpenters or tax collectors; or give them an upper hand in the next temple election? None of the above. They believed that Jesus spoke the truth and that he was the anointed of God. Even with all of their flaws, they wanted to give their lives to God. Yes, Jesus assured them that they would be richly blessed – together with persecutions – for their decision to follow him, but that wasn’t their motivation. Jesus spoke to their hearts. He triggered in them a desire to encounter God on a level they had never known.  In a sense, they were set free from the “things” that held them back from God. As Lent approaches, may we be set free so that we can give up everything and follow Jesus.

What are the “things” that hold me back from making a full commitment to follow Jesus? What is one area, or one sin that hinders me from a better relationship with Jesus. Can I give that to Jesus for Lent so that I can be set free?

Pray: Loving God, give me a heart that loves you and seeks you above all things so I can follow you with all my heart. I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy God; Holy and Mighty One; Holy and Immortal One: Have mercy on us and on the whole world!
