Matthew 8:23-27

As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him.
Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea,
so that the boat was being swamped by waves;
but he was asleep.
They came and woke him, saying,
“Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?”
Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea,
and there was great calm.
The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this,
whom even the winds and the sea obey?”

Reflect: What terrifies us? The situations in life that make us afraid are likely to be the same things that lead us into sin and to lose faith in God.  Life is bound to bring us storms of many kinds.  These storms are a metaphor for the problems, challenges, weaknesses or temptations that can take hold of us and turn us away from God. Jesus is exposed to the same world that the apostles experience. He is in the same boat with them; in fact, he is in the same boat with us. But he is calm; so calm that he is asleep because he knows the peace that comes from placing himself in the hands of the Father. So as we panic and are overcome by many life situations, Jesus’ reminder to us is that he is with us and his grace, his death and resurrection have already conquered anything that can swamp our lives.  He invites us to trust; to call out to him; to let him take charge of what seems to overwhelm us; to be at peace for he is with us – he won’t allow us to drown.

Pray: Loving God, many things in life can cause me to panic, to be afraid and to lose faith. Please instill in me the courage, grace, strength and wisdom to trust you; to trust you with every aspect of my life. Help me to believe and live in a way that finds true peace in you, no matter the circumstances of my life. Help me to know that you are always in the same boat with me and that you will not fail me. Amen.
