Matthew 11:20-22

Jesus began to reproach the towns
where most of his mighty deeds had been done,
since they had not repented.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
For if the mighty deeds done in your midst
had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable
for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.”

Reflect: In the Gospel today, Jesus chastises those peoples who failed to recognize him and his message so as to avoid repentance. In the first reading from the Prophet Isaiah, we are exhorted that, “Unless your faith is firm, you shall not be firm.” (Isaiah 7:9) In the context of our contemporary world, how does this message hit home?  We are often blind to the message and presence of Jesus. We are surrounded by a culture that seems to be very quick to eliminate or disregard the influence of Jesus. There is no excuse for racism, profiling, disregard for life, murder, and killing of police officers that we witness too often in our world.  What might these painful incidents be telling us about our need to repent and to be attentive to the message of life, the message of Jesus? How can I become a difference maker? In what ways do I need to repent, to change my attitudes?  What ways do I need to forgive and be forgiven?

Pray: Loving God, help me to see where and how I avoid you and your message. Give me the grace to repent of my sins. Have mercy on me and on our society.  Use me as an instrument of forgiveness and reconciliation. Help me to be strong in faith so that I can be an instrument of positive change so that your ways, your light, may conquer the darkness of our world. Amen.
