Matthew 12:46-50

While Jesus was speaking to the crowds,
his mother and his brothers appeared outside,
wishing to speak with him.
Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
asking to speak with you.”
But he said in reply to the one who told him,
“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father
is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

Reflect: Is it possible that Jesus was showing disregard toward his own mother?  No.  Rather, Jesus uses the opportunity to drive home the point that relationship with him goes beyond flesh and blood. He shows that if we really want to be an intimate part of his family, then we need to live in unity with the will of the heavenly Father. In other words, we need to love and desire whatever God wants for us. Mary had already achieved that with her fiat: “Let it be done unto me according to your will.”  He won’t lead us astray.  He only wants us to find the fullness of purpose for which each of us was created. How do I resist God’s will for my life? Does fear of the unknown hold me back from a genuine “yes” to God?

Pray: Loving God, you loved me before I was born. You want only the best, the fullness of life for me. Please give me the grace to put aside my fears of the unknown that hold me back from doing and accepting your will in my life. Amen.
