Matthew 13:44-46

 Jesus said to his disciples:
The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
which a person finds and hides again,
and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
searching for fine pearls.
When he finds a pearl of great price,
he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”

Reflect: A disciple starts as an ordinary person who is driven to search for the truth. Once the discovery is made, it changes everything – one’s life, priorities, dreams. The changed person is the disciple who is willing to sacrifice everything else for the sake of preserving that treasure and carrying it around the world for everyone to see. A disciple has a zeal for the Kingdom of God. Despite temptations or pressures or even the opinion of others, the disciple, fortified with the grace and strength of God, understands that it’s worth forging ahead without counting the cost. Through our baptism, each of us is called to be a disciple no matter our vocation or state in life.

What needs to be “sold off” in my life to be a true disciple? Can I trust God enough to believe that there is nothing that can compare with being united in the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus?

Pray: Loving God, I want you in my life. I want to seek you with all I have. Yet, I am often distracted by the lures of the world around me. Please give me the grace to focus on seeing you; the grace to desire you and your ways above all else. Help me to desire to make your love and mercy known to everyone I encounter. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

WE BELIEVE, AND THEREFORE SPEAK (2 Corinthians 4:13)
