Jeremiah 31:1-4a

At that time, says the LORD,
I will be the God of all the tribes of Israel,
and they shall be my people.
Thus says the LORD:
The people that escaped the sword
have found favor in the desert.
As Israel comes forward to be given his rest,
the LORD appears to him from afar:
With age-old love I have loved you;
so I have kept my mercy toward you.
Again I will restore you, and you shall be rebuilt,

O virgin Israel;

Reflect: In both readings today, we see the intervention of God in the midst of the storm.  From the Prophet Jeremiah, God speaks of his desire to show mercy to Israel after his holy people had experienced great suffering resulting from their unfaithful choices. In the gospel from Matthew, an unbeliever, a Canaanite woman, is seemingly rejected by Jesus in her quest for healing for her daughter. By her determined persistence, however, Jesus sees that she has a heart of faith, and he responds with mercy toward her and heals her daughter. No matter how we have sinned, where our unfaithful choices have taken us, or even if we have distanced ourselves from God, whenever we repent and seek Jesus he’ll be there with his mercy to forgive and restore us.

Do I fear being transparent with Jesus?  Am I willing to put my fears aside and seek Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation; or, at the very least, seek counsel from a priest or other minister of God regarding the state of my life?

Pray: Loving God, I seek your restoration.  I am broken by life; by my sins and poor choices. Only with you as my foundation can my life be rebuilt. Have mercy on me and set me free. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

WE BELIEVE, AND THEREFORE SPEAK (2 Corinthians 4:13)
