 2 Corinthians 9:6-10

Brothers and sisters:
Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver.

Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you,
so that in all things, always having all you need,
you may have an abundance for every good work.

As it is written:
He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.
The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food
will supply and multiply your seed
and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

Reflect: When we have our priorities straight, God is able to make every grace abundant for us. He will provide whatever we need to do his will. Saint Lawrence, when ordered by the emperor to gather together all the riches of the empire, brought back the poor, the marginalized, the disabled and widows. Clearly Lawrence made the statement that his allegiance was to God, and he took great joy in serving people most in need. For his “arrogance” Lawrence was burned at the stake. God may not ask us to be martyrs for the faith, but he wants us to die to self so that we can understand that true joy comes when we serve others for the sake of God’s kingdom.

In what ways do self-absorption and selfishness diminish my ability to serve God?  How can I better dedicate myself to serve others and live out God’s will for me?

Pray: Loving God, your ways are not always my ways. I put myself into your hands and ask that you teach me how to serve you by serving others. I pray this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

WE BELIEVE, AND THEREFORE SPEAK (2 Corinthians 4:13)
