Luke 7:11-17

Jesus said to Nicodemus:
“No one has gone up to heaven
except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him might not perish
but might have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world might be saved through him.

Reflect: The cross is a sign of triumph, of victory!  Without faith, it seems to be a symbol of defeat, a disaster.  The cross leads to the resurrection.  Yes, we exalt in the cross and the salvation won for us through Christ Jesus.  But Jesus reminds us that we are invited to bring our burdens, our personal crosses to be united with his.  What Jesus has won for us is not disconnected from the reality of our own struggles.  Precisely because of his incomparable love for us, the cross and resurrection is an unending event that draws all things to life.  It is not a one and done reality, but rather it is intimately intertwined with our present and eternal reality.  May God grant us the faith to see and experience the joy of the cross.

Is the cross of Christ something that attracts me?  Do I believe that Jesus invites me to unite my own burdens and brokenness with his redemptive cross?

Pray: Loving God, you are my life. Help me to embrace the cross and experience in it hope, victory, peace and joy. I ask this in the powerful, perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,
because by your Cross you have redeemed the world.
