A Minute from Malvern

Mark J. Poletunow, Malvern President (  (Readings for the day)

 Mark 10:42-45

Jesus summoned them and said to them,
“You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles
lord it over them,
and their great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.

For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Reflect: Typically, our mindset is averse to considering roles as a slave or servant; but Jesus reinvents that concept.  He teaches that success means that we take on the attitude and posture of someone who puts others first; who is concerned about the well-being and, ultimately, the salvation of the other.  The greatest, the first is the person who finds power and strength through service and example.  Want power? Put self last and strive to empower others. Want to be first? Be willing to pour out one’s life for the other; to die – just as Jesus did.

Pray: Loving God, very often I stumble over my ego in my desire to be first, to be noticed, to get attention. Please give me a heart that seeks to serve, to lift up others and to make their lives better. Give me the grace to give up myself for the sake of the other – just as you did. Amen.
