June 1, 2016 – Memorial of St. Justin, Martyr

Mark J. Poletunow, Malvern President (  (Readings for the day)

2 Timothy 1: 7-8

For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice
but rather of power and love and self-control.
So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord,
nor of me, a prisoner for his sake;
but bear your share of hardship for the Gospel
with the strength that comes from God.

Reflect: It isn’t easy being a disciple. Today, we remember St. Justin who died for his witness of the Gospel, the life of Jesus Christ. Knowing that Timothy will face trials as he faithfully preaches the Gospel, Paul, in the scripture above, is encouraging him to not shrink away from that call. Likewise for us, we are called through baptism and confirmation to boldly proclaim Christ by the way we conduct our lives. There is nothing to be ashamed about regarding the life of Christ and his Word.  It fills us with the light, power and love that the world needs so desperately.

Pray: Loving God, I love you, but the world doesn’t often want to hear about you. Please give me the gifts of courage and wisdom to boldly conduct my life according to your ways, and to witness to your Word by the choices I make and words I speak – when convenient and inconvenient. Amen.
