O Emmanuel,

Our King and Giver of Law:

Come to save us, Lord our God!

A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (1:39-45)

Mary set out in those days
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”

Reflect: Today’s “O Antiphon” is “O Emmanuel” – God is with us! In the first reading from the Old Testament Song of Songs, we hear how our God comes to us like a lover leaping the mountains and bounding the hills to be with the beloved; to capture but a glimpse of his heart’s desire. In the Gospel, Elizabeth affirms the presence of God within Mary by proclaiming, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.” So it is for us; Jesus, Emmanuel, the Savior of the World, desires to break through all barriers to reach us. Nothing can contain his love for us. It is up to us to have a heart and mind ready and willing to receive him.

Is my heart ready to receive Jesus and his incomparable love? Can I clear away the distractions and busy-ness of life for a few moments today to repeat the words, “Come, Lord Jesus! Touch my heart with your love.”?

Pray: Loving God, come into my heart; take hold of my life. Do not delay. I need your presence so much. You are my only hope.  I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen

The Lord and Ruler will be coming soon, and his name will be called Emmanuel, because he will be God-with-us. (cf. Is 7:14; 8:10)
