Second Book of Kings 2:9

Elijah said to Elisha,
“Ask for whatever I may do for you, before I am taken from you.”
Elisha answered, “May I receive a double portion of your spirit.”

Reflect: Elisha had been the Prophet Elijah’s disciple and witnessed Elijah’s faith and the great things that God accomplished through the prophet. As Elijah nears death, Elisha desires to follow in his footsteps as a son follows his father. So he makes the audacious request to receive a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. Such was his prayer. In the Gospel today, Jesus tells his disciples to pray so as not to bring attention to themselves, but rather to pray and ask the Father in secret. In the secret of our prayer, what do we ask of God? What do we seek and why?

Pray: Loving God, provide for me the grace to be transparent and honest in prayer so that whatever I seek might bring you honor and glory, bring others closer to you and build up your Kingdom here on earth. Amen.

WE BELIEVE, AND THEREFORE SPEAK (2 Corinthians 4:13)
