Matthew 11:25-27

At that time Jesus exclaimed:
I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.

Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows the Son except the Father,
and no one knows the Father except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

Reflect: Underlying this prayer of praise is Jesus’ awareness that the powerful, influential, affluent, self-reliant do not validate themselves by their self-worth or self-importance; but rather, it is the childlike – the trusting, the faith-filled, the repentant, the transparent heart, the humble – who are most immediately receptive to the message and love of God and who are in-tune with God’s will.  We are facing challenging times.  In today’s first reading from Isaiah, God reveals his anger at a people who are so preoccupied with the ways of the world that they are blind and deaf to the presence of God.  Regardless, Jesus has come into our world, died for our sins and rose again, so that the door will be open to anyone who has a change of heart and a fervent desire to know, love and serve him and to love others as oneself.  A change of heart, one person at a time, is what can change a family, a parish, a community, a country, and ultimately, the world.  In what ways do I need to become more like Jesus?  How must I let go of those things that keep me far from the heart of Christ?

Pray: Loving God, I need you more than I admit. With you, I have everything; apart from you, I have nothing.  Please take me by the hand and show me the way to you, to true discipleship. Pour out your grace over all aspects of my life, especially those parts of my heart that keep me separated from you. Amen.
