Jeremiah 1:4-8

The word of the LORD came to me thus:

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I dedicated you,

a prophet to the nations I appointed you.
“Ah, Lord GOD!” I said,
I know not how to speak; I am too young.”

But the LORD answered me,
Say not, “I am too young.”
To whomever I send you, you shall go;
whatever I command you, you shall speak.
Have no fear before them,
because I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.

Reflect: God knew us before we were formed in the womb. He already loved us and dedicated us for a purpose in life before we were born. Most of us resist God in one way or another. We can come up with a thousand excuses about why and how we should do something apart from God’s will. Jeremiah the prophet offered the excuse that he was too young and that he couldn’t speak well. But God wouldn’t buy it; after all, Jeremiah was chosen to speak at a particular time to a particular people determined by God – for God’s timing is perfect timing. We, like Jeremiah, often resist God out of fear.  God, however, reassures Jeremiah that he shouldn’t be afraid because God would put words in the prophet’s mouth and set him over nations and kingdoms.  Can I accept that God created me for a unique purpose in the world?  Can I trust God enough to give me the courage to speak and act even when fear and anxiety have the best of me?

Pray: Loving God, give me the faith to believe that you have called me and you desire to use me for a unique mission in the world. Help me to never underestimate your ability to take the ordinary and use it for extraordinary purposes. Please give me the courage to speak and act as someone chosen and loved by you from before I was born to always give you honor and glory. I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.
