James 4:13-17

Beloved:
Come now, you who say,
“Today or tomorrow we shall go into such and such a town,
spend a year there doing business, and make a profit”–
you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow.
You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears.
Instead you should say,
“If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that.”
But now you are boasting in your arrogance.
All such boasting is evil.
So for one who knows the right thing to do
and does not do it, it is a sin.

Reflect: It is so easy for us to get filled up with ourselves – our education, awards, recognitions, accomplishments.  But James reminds us that all of that is for naught – “You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and disappears.” Should we stop seeking to excel and to do the best we can for ourselves and our families?  Absolutely not.  However, this exhortation is directed to us so that in whatever we do and however we do it we will always seek the will of God. I can ask myself: Do I truly seek to honor the Lord with all of my words, actions and thoughts? Do I seek to build up the kingdom of God by the way I conduct my affairs in whatever circumstance or situation I find myself?  Are the choices I make really directed to glorify God, honor others and use my life in the best way possible?

Pray: Loving God, show me the way to you.  Help me to make the best use of all that I have and all that I am to glorify you, honor others and to witness that you are my God and that I have no other.  Amen.

WE BELIEVE, AND THEREFORE SPEAK (2 Corinthians 4:13)
