JAMES 3:13-18

Beloved:
Who among you is wise and understanding?
Let him show his works by a good life
in the humility that comes from wisdom.
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts,
do not boast and be false to the truth.
Wisdom of this kind does not come down from above
but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist,
there is disorder and every foul practice.
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,
then peaceable, gentle, compliant,
full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity.
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace
for those who cultivate peace.

Reflect: The choice is ours.  Do we want to live a life that is earthly, unspiritual and demonic or one that is peaceable, gentle, compliant and full of mercy? Through the apostle James, God is speaking to the heart of each one of us.  If we place the world’s values before God’s, we are on the road toward self-destruction manifested in bitter jealousy, selfish ambition, and insincerity; in other words, frauds who are just pretending to follow Christ. The challenge and goal for us must be to become and sustain a life that reflects the life of Christ in all that we do – seen and unseen.  Jesus Christ is life, and he needs us to bring his life and light into the world.  He gives us free will, but he is longing for us to conform ourselves with him and his ways in all things.

Pray: Jesus, help me to be a genuine disciple who brings your presence to all of the nooks and crannies of my life and world.  Amen.
