A Reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (5:20-6:2)

Brothers and sisters:
We are ambassadors for Christ,
as if God were appealing through us.
We implore you on behalf of Christ,
be reconciled to God.

For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin,
so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.

Working together, then,
we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.
For he says:

In an acceptable time I heard you,
and on the day of salvation I helped you.

Behold, now is a very acceptable time;
behold, now is the day of salvation.

Reflect: Now is a very acceptable time; now is the day of salvation. Lent challenges us to step up and take more seriously our life and relationship with Jesus. Lenten practices can be thorny.  The joy of this season, however, is the knowledge that the cross sets us free, that Jesus rose from the dead and conquered sin and death. That is the hope that gives us strength. Human nature being what it is, there is always something for us to work on. Maybe as we begin Lent, we can identify one pattern or habit of sin that is causing distance between us and God. Perhaps whatever Lenten practices we choose can be directed toward setting us free from that sin. So as we select practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, let’s ask God to help us find ways to leave that area of sin behind so that we can love him, love others and love ourselves more. Now is a very acceptable time to work on being the people that God made us to be. May we cooperate with his grace so that we can experience the fullness of the day of salvation!

What is one habit or area of sin that I really need to pay attention to during Lent 2017? What are the practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving that I’m choosing to help me grow closer to Christ, to reconcile myself to him and extend genuine care and compassion toward others?

Pray: Loving God, give me a heart that willingly embraces holy fasting, deepened prayer and heightened charity toward others so that as I enter this season of battle against spiritual evils I might always find hope and strength in the victory of your saving cross.  I ask this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned! (Psalm 51)
