First Letter of Saint John 3:22-4:6

Psalm 2

Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25

Today, the Monday after the Epiphany, reminds us of our call to “do what pleases Him.”  In our first reading Saint John tells us, “The way we know that He remains in us is from the Spirit whom He gave us.  Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God.”

This then is our challenge.  At the Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia we studied Ignatian spirituality which speaks about the spirits and describes the need to discern whether or not the spirit, which is moving you, is of a good or an evil spirit.  Therefore, our first reading encourages us to “pay attention” to our interior movements and discern the movements of good and evil spirits that appear to us in our daily lives.

In discerning these spirits we will be able to understand and live our lives in harmony with God.  I believe we must accept and rejoice in the face that we have all been given different gifts and talents.  When we use our unique gifts, we honor God, but we must, as we heard, regularly “test the spirits” and pay attention to our interior life by reflecting on how they are influencing our thoughts and actions.  Ignatius wrote, “Perceive the different spirits that are moving in you; one coming from the devil, the other coming from God.”

As I mentioned earlier, discerning the spirit that moves us is a daily challenge.  In this challenge the good spirit can often be recognized by feelings of strength, courage, and peace while the evil spirit may often by recognized with feelings of anxiety, sadness, frustration and even confusion.

How then do we make sense of all of this?  Our good St. Joh gives us the best advice, “We belong to God, and anyone who knows God listens to us, while anyone who does not belong to God refuses to hear us.  This is how we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.”

Question of the Day:  Do you put all your faith and trust in God the Holy Spirit who guides you through your earthly life?

Prayer:  Almighty God and Father, strengthen my faith and my trust.  Grant me all the graces that I need to recognize what is good and what is evil.
