Book of Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18

Psalm 19

Matthew 25:31-46

“Essentially, there are two kinds of people, because there are two kinds of love.  One is holy the other selfish.  One is subject to God the other endeavors to equal Him.”  Saint Augustine.

Today’s Gospel gives us a “casual” picture of what will happen on the Day of Judgment.  But I wonder why this passage is placed at the very beginning of the Lenten Season?  I suspect it is because the Church wants to offer us a positive stimulus to our personal conversion and reformation of our lives.  The Church reminds us that Jesus Himself will certainly return as our judge.  We will all be judged individually based on the standard of “real love in the form of works of mercy.”  That is, the “sheep” will inherit eternal life because they respond to the real needs that had been set before them.  However the “goats” will inherit eternal damnation because they failed to respond to those same needs.

Friends, on the Day of Judgment separation is inevitable.  The Day of Judgment will reveal those who have shown true compassion and mercy toward their neighbor.  God will judge us not only for the wrongs we have done but also, just as important, what we have failed to do.  That is why Jesus repeatedly teaches us a very important lesson about loving our neighbor and taking responsibility for them.

Our Lord expects us to find Him under the veil of His humanity and expects us to encounter Him in other people. No matter how difficult some people may appear to us Jesus identified Himself with all those who need to be served.   Now it is our turn.

Question of the Day:  God is so gracious and merciful to us.  Do we treat our neighbor with mercy and love as Christ has treated us?

Prayer:  “We love because He first loved us.”  (First letter of Saint John 4:19.)
