Monday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

September 23, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Memorial Feast:  Saint Padre Pio (1887-1968)

Ezra 1:1-6

Psalm 126:1b-2ab, 2cd-3, 4-5, 6

Luke 8:16-18

Today’s image about lighting a lamp refers to an oil lamp with a wick that could be lit.  Many such ancient oil lamps have been discovered in and around the area we now call the “Holy Land.”  Such lamps would light up a house when darkness came.  As Jesus says, “No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed.”  His words make obvious sense.

If the lamp of faith is lit in a human life, it is not meant to be covered or hidden; rather it should shed light.  The light of our faith needs to shine through how we live, what we do and how we do it.  In order for us to nurture the light of faith we must listen to the Holy Word of Jesus.  Our Lord tells us, “Take care, then, how you hear.  To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away.”  After listening to His Word, we let that light of faith shine out, through our own words and in our lifestyle.

Question of the Day:  Will you allow Jesus, the Light of the World, shine in your heart, mind and spirit?

Prayer:  “You must have boundless faith in the divine goodness, for the victory is absolutely certain.”  (St. Padre Pio)
