Monday of the Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time

First Thessalonians 1:1-5, 8b-10

Psalm 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a+9b

Matthew 23:13-22

Today’s Gospel reading reminds us that Jesus was “God made man.”  Personally, I often think of Him as a more mild-mannered and patient man.   But Jesus was not afraid to “tell it like it is.”  Like all of us, He must have been frustrated, impatient and, even angry when He came across what He saw was injustice or hypocrisy.  The scribes and Pharisees bear the brunt of His words in Matthew’s Gospel narrative.  It’s a lesson we can learn from today.  We can’t just pay lip service to the Gospel’s message – we have to live it.  Sitting in church each week and dutifully filling out our offertory envelope with a check is not enough.  Certainly, those things are part of our life in the church.  But we have to live the Good News of the Holy Gospel.  We can’t be blind to our obligations to live our lives both in church and outside of church with love and compassion.  Our Lord knows it’s not easy for us.  We have busy lives filled with countless obligations and distractions.  But we need to remember that our faith is not just something to check off on a list like a common chore.  We need to infuse our lives with the Holy Gospel and live it as best we can every day.  One way is to create a new to-do list:

  • Time for daily prayer
  • Time for the people around me
  • Time for less grumbling and more helping
  • Time for giving thanks to God for all I have been given

We can all take small steps in the effort to make our “gifts” to God sacred.  We need to open our eyes and not be one of the blind fools or blind guides that Jesus rebukes in today’s Gospel.

Question of the Day:  Will I pray that God helps me see what it is to live a life infused with the Holy Gospel.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, may Your Reign be realized always more and more in me and all of your children as we live Jesus’ Gospel message.
