My Beloved Child
Malvern Minute

A Minute from Malvern

January 8, 2018 The Baptism of the Lord

The heavens were opened and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, listen to him. Alleluia, alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (1:7-11)

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed:
“One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.

I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee
and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open
and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens,
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Reflect: You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. The heavenly Father affirms Jesus at the moment of his baptism. Jesus didn’t need baptism; yet he humbled himself to demonstrate to us a disposition of repentance and an attitude of surrender to the will of the Father.  As we approach baptism and as we ask to be freed from original sin, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit take great delight in us. We are declared a beloved daughter or son with whom our God is well pleased. A powerful grace is given us by the Holy Spirit to keep our eyes fixed on God, to find strength against the powers of the world. We know that as much as we try, remaining faithful to the Lord in all circumstances is a challenge. Sometimes we act contrary to the purpose for which we were made. Regardless, we are beloved children of the Father; he never abandons us. As we strive to listen to his voice, despite our sinfulness, we give witness to the Way, the Truth and the Life. Let us pray daily for the grace to love the Lord with all of our heart, mind, spirit, and strength, so that whomever we encounter might feel drawn to seek God in this world and desire to be with him forever in the heavenly Kingdom. The Lord is pleased when we strive to live faithfully so that others may be drawn to salvation in him.

Questions: Do I recognize that I am a beloved child of God? Do I consciously desire to love the Lord with all of my heart, mind, spirit and strength? Does my life reflect the light of Christ that draws others into relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

Pray: Loving God, I humbly ask your mercy, that in faithfully listening to your Only Begotten Son I may be your child in name and in truth.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Behold the One of whom John said: I have seen and testified that this is the son of God.
