A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (12:1-7)

At that time:
So many people were crowding together
that they were trampling one another underfoot.
Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples,
“Beware of the leaven–that is, the hypocrisy–of the Pharisees.

“There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed,
nor secret that will not be known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness
will be heard in the light,
and what you have whispered behind closed doors
will be proclaimed on the housetops.

I tell you, my friends,
do not be afraid of those who kill the body
but after that can do no more.

I shall show you whom to fear.
Be afraid of the one who after killing
has the power to cast into Gehenna;
yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.
Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?
Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.
Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
Do not be afraid.
You are worth more than many sparrows.”

Reflect: Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows. Jesus’ reassurance in today’s Gospel is to be an encouragement for those who are genuinely and authentically trusting in God. If God can care infinitesimally about a few sparrows, how much more will he care about you and me who are made in his image and likeness. We can easily fall into measuring our value based on earthly or societal measures; but the real measure is based on our trust in the Lord. Do we value his words? Do we seek his ways? Do we strive to make him known with our lives? Do we entrust our families, our relationships, our accomplishments; all that we seek to be in life, to the Lord and his will? “What you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops.” Our hope is that on our judgment day, God will recognize that we have left a heritage of faithful discipleship that will honor him to the high heavens. Don’t we owe that to the One who is our Creator and the One who loves us beyond measure? At the end, that will be our net worth.

Questions: What do I strive to be in life? At the end of my life, will I be pleased with what is shouted from the rooftops about how I lived my life; how I loved God and treated others?  Can I say an Act of Trust prayer to God today; entrusting all that I am, all that I have, and all that I seek to be to God the Father?

Pray: Loving God, my life is in your hands. You are the source of all that I have and all that I am. May my life glorify your Name and advance your Kingdom here on earth.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Saint Paul of the Cross: Pray for us!

Paul was born near Genoa, Italy in 1720. He lost ten of his fifteen siblings to illness. Nonetheless, his devout mother made time to read to her eldest son, sharing with him the writings of the Desert Fathers. At seventeen, Paul felt a call to live a life of strict penance. In prayer, he conceived the Rule for a new religious order: men who would embrace monastic austerity as the foundation for their public proclamation of the Pssion of our Lord. Paul and his younger brother John began preaching; others joined them to form the first Passionists. Today, they number about 2,200 whose apostolate is retreats and missions. Paul died on October 18, 1775.
