December 12, 2017 Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Blessed are you, holy Virgin Mary, deserving of all praise; from you rose the sun of justice, Christ our God. Alleluia, alleluia!

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Zechariah (2:14-17)

Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion!
See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the LORD.
Many nations shall join themselves to the LORD on that day,
and they shall be his people,
and he will dwell among you,
and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.

The LORD will possess Judah as his portion in the holy land,
and he will again choose Jerusalem.
Silence, all mankind, in the presence of the LORD!
For he stirs forth from his holy dwelling.

Reflect: Many nations shall join themselves to the LORD on that day, and they shall be his people, and he will dwell among you, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. Our God is always with us; and Mary, our Mother, is always assisting at his side. In December 1531, Juan Diego encountered a beautiful pregnant young woman who appeared to be of his Aztec heritage and spoke his language, Nahuatl. During several miraculous apparitions, the woman proved herself to be the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through these encounters, she demonstrated that she, as our Mother, wanted to embrace Mexico’s native people, the Aztecs, and, as time would show, all of the diverse peoples of America (North, South, and Central). Pope Pius XII declared Our Lady of Guadalupe to be the “Queen of the Americas.” Being that she appeared during Advent, she showed Jesus with her as an unborn infant in her womb.  Within the next seven years, eight million people were converted to the faith. People still seek God through this apparition; the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most visited shrine in honor of Our Lady. As we continue through Advent, we need this reassurance that Jesus wants to appear to all of us; he wants to make his dwelling among us. Mary guides us to him. Come, Lord Jesus!  Mary show us the way to open our hearts to your Son!

Questions: Is my heart ready to receive Jesus? What do I need to do for a deeper conversion and to accept the love that Jesus wants to show me? Am I open to finding out more about Jesus through his mother, our Blessed Mother?

Pray: Loving God, help me to reflect on Mary’s words to Juan Diego:

Am I not here, I, who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need anything more? Let nothing else worry you, disturb you.

I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Our Lady of Guadalupe: Pray for us!

In 1999, Pope John Paul II declared Our Lady of Guadalupe the Patroness of the Unborn.
