O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God! Alleluia, alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (1:5-25)

Mary set out in those days
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,

and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”

Reflect: Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. With only a few days before Christmas, the Church reminds us about Mary’s visitation with her cousin Elizabeth. Both women are experiencing the miraculous intervention of God in their lives. It is John the Baptist still in the womb of Elizabeth who first recognizes Jesus, the incarnation of God, still in his mother’s womb. Elizabeth cannot contain herself for the joy that she feels through her unborn son, John. She proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? …Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”  Elizabeth is beside herself for joy. During the Christmas season we sing: Come let us adore him.. Christ the Lord! Let’s pray that our encounter with Christ in these days is so filled with joy that we can’t hold ourselves back from proclaiming the mighty and awesome works of God. God wants to do a great work in our lives. Let’s get out of the way, and let him be God. May what we encounter at Christmas fill us with a zeal for the Kingdom of God. A zeal that will lead us to a closer walk with Christ, and a zeal that will motivate us to be engaged disciples who desire to make Christ known with our lives.

Questions: Am I taking time to receive and recognize Christ in my midst? In the midst of holiday trappings, am I seeking Jesus? How might I cut to the core of Christmas so that I don’t miss the awesome ways that Christ wants to come into my life to make a real difference in how I think, feel and act on a daily basis?

Pray: Loving God, there is no one like you. You are an awesome God. Help me to be ready to recognize you and receive you as you draw close to me. Help me to not miss the wonderful gift of your life that you wish to give me this Christmas.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Blessed are you who have believed, that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.
