A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (21:12-19)

Jesus said to the crowd:
They will seize and persecute you,
they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons,
and they will have you led before kings and governors
because of my name.
It will lead to your giving testimony.
Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand,
for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking
that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute.
You will even be handed over by parents,
brothers, relatives, and friends,
and they will put some of you to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but not a hair on your head will be destroyed.

By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”

Reflect: By your perseverance you will secure your lives. Jesus never promised that the Christian life would be comfortable or easy. In fact, today’s Gospel passage reminds us that our journey with Christ will be filled with persecution, rejection and suffering. Through it all, Jesus encourages us to persevere. We can persevere only when we are firmly connected to our foundation, Jesus Christ the Lord. When we face all sorts of challenges to our faithfulness, the Lord assures us that the Holy Spirit will be there in our moment of trial. Like a successful athlete, we must have a daily routine that will strengthen us for the huge moments of testing. Daily prayer, nourishment from the Scriptures, frequent participation in the Sacraments, practicing acts of selfless love through the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy all contribute to our being fit for the Kingdom of God. May God give us the grace to persevere and stay strong for his honor and glory, and for our salvation into eternal life.

Questions: When do I feel most challenged to persevere in faithfully following Jesus? Do I trust that the Lord will be there to sustain me even in the toughest times? What decision can I make today that will help to prepare me to be stronger in my faith and trust in the Lord more?

Pray: Loving God, this life and the world around me is beautiful in many ways, yet it is filled with many trials and difficulties. Give me the grace to know how to grow strong in my faith, and the courage to be faithful to you until the end.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy God; Holy and Mighty One; Holy and Immortal One: Have mercy on us and on the whole world!
