A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians (2:6-15)

Brothers and sisters:
As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him,
rooted in him and built upon him
and established in the faith as you were taught,
abounding in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy
according to the tradition of men,
according to the elemental powers of the world
and not according to Christ.

For in him dwells the whole fullness of the deity bodily,
and you share in this fullness in him,
who is the head of every principality and power.
In him you were also circumcised
with a circumcision not administered by hand,
by stripping off the carnal body, with the circumcision of Christ.
You were buried with him in baptism,
in which you were also raised with him
through faith in the power of God,
who raised him from the dead.
And even when you were dead in transgressions
and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
he brought you to life along with him,
having forgiven us all our transgressions;
obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims,
which was opposed to us,
he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross;
despoiling the principalities and the powers,
he made a public spectacle of them,
leading them away in triumph by it.

Reflect: As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted in him and built upon him and established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Saint Paul’s exhortation applies as much to us today as it did to the Colossians of the first century. Paul was all too aware of how the followers of Christ could be attracted by an “empty, seductive philosophy according to the tradition of men.”  Somewhat like the parable of the seed, we can be swayed by the trends of our culture, and then our faith disappears once it is tested or challenged.  We can flourish, however, if we are truly rooted in Christ and our lives are built in him. As we celebrate this feast honoring the Most Holy Name of Mary, we are encouraged by our Mother’s faith. The French bishop and theologian Jacques-Benigne Bossuet expressed it like this: “Mary always speaks efficaciously, because she speaks to the heart of a Son. Let her then speak boldly on our behalf to the heart of Jesus. What grace shall she ask for us? What do we desire from her intercession? Do you hesitate? Does not her charity inspire you to desire to be strengthened in charity? It is this that we ask.”  Mary helps us to build a strong and lasting relationship with Jesus that cannot be shaken, that will remain firm to the end. Let us implore the name of Mary. Let us trust our Mother to lead us to a strong, unwavering relationship with Jesus, abounding in thanksgiving.

Questions: How well rooted is my relationship with Jesus? Am I easily swayed by philosophies of the society around me rather than being firmly rooted in Jesus? Do I trust the intercession of Mary to help me to build and maintain a strong relationship with Jesus, as his disciple?

Pray: Loving God, may I obtain the grace of your blessing through the intercession of Mary, that from her, whose holy Name I venerate, I may obtain help in my every need.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Amen.
