December 14, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Memorial Feast:  Saint John of the Cross (1542-1591) Patron Saint of the Contemplative Life

Sirach 48:1-4, 9-11

Psalm 80

Matthew 17:9a, 10-13

I recently read a story about a group of Catholic high school students decorating their school gym in preparation for their Christmas celebration.  They were thinking about taking down the crucifix hanging on a wall when a priest approached them and said, “Don’t take the crucifix down.  After all, the reason why Jesus was born was to die for us on the cross.”

Friends, today’s Gospel passage speaks about three great prophets:  Elijah, John the Baptist and Jesus Himself.  These three knew that they were sent by God to speak about God, to stand and speak the truth about God.  They were not afraid of the consequences of speaking this truth.  But the people refused to listen to their message, they made fun of them, criticized and rejected them and these three prophets all died at an early age.  This is what they did not do:

A “prophet” is not, “a deceiver or somebody who deceived others into believing that his message is true (Jer. 23); A “prophet” is not, “a liar or somebody who denies that Jesus is the Christ (1 Jn. 2:22); a “prophet” is not, “a blasphemer or somebody who speaks evil of God (Jude 4, 10, 12, 13.)

We are more than half-way through our Advent journey as we prepare for the arrival of the Lord.  And what do we actually experience on Christmas morning?   Is it just another holiday we celebrate during the year or is it the realization that we celebrate the day that changed the world – FOREVER?

What we need to realize is that Elijah spoke with fire.  John the Baptist came to “prepare the Way.”  And Jesus, is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Question of the Day:  Will you recognize the signs?  Will you recognize Jesus when He comes?

Prayer:  Father, Your Priest Saint John of the Cross became a model of perfect self-denial and showed us how to love the Cross.  May we always imitate him and be rewarded with the eternal contemplation of the coming of your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
