Isaiah 58:9b-14

Psalm 86 (11ab)

Luke 5:27-32

If you had to define the word “friend” what would it be?  Would it sound something like this; Treat your friends the way you want to be treated; Keep secrets that are told to you; Pay attention when your friend is talking; Keep your promises; Share things with your friend; Always tell your friend the truth; Stick up for your friends; and be a good listener.

In today’s Gospel narrative Jesus calls Levi, a tax collector, to be one of His followers and apostle.  I find it so interesting that our Lord admits poor fishermen, men of the lowest rank to follow Him and now, incredibly, He admits a “publican,” a man of the worst reputation to join His inner, trusted circle.  In this instance Christ humbles Himself and appears in the likeness of sinful flesh.  By this He exposes Himself and gets the true character of a “friend” of all publicans and sinners alike.

Jesus is “our friend!”  We may have neglected the friendship or have been out of touch for a while from Him but the Lord continues to have an intimate and growing relationship with each one of us who comes to Him.  He is ready whenever we are to renew our friendship with Him.  Our beloved friend is always waiting to hear from us.  Fold your hands together and give Him a call.

Question of the Day:  Are you prepared to build a friendship with Jesus and have Him become part of your life story?

Prayer:  Jesus, my friend, fill me as I hunger and thirst after Your righteousness, so I fall so deeply in love with You that nothing else matters.

Consider joining the Men and Women of Malvern by deepening your personal relationship with Jesus and your commitment as a disciple through a weekend retreat.
