Saturday of the Third Week of Lent

March 13, 2021

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, Media, PA

Book of the Prophet Hosea 6:1-6

Psalm 51:3-4, 18-21

Luke 18:9-14

Today’s readings speak to us about forgiveness, mercy, and redemption.  David, in Psalm 51, begs for forgiveness; Hosea discusses incredible generosity and grace for forgiveness; the gospel of Saint Luke refers to sin and cleansing.  We have the theme here of repentance, knowledge, and of grace being offered to us.

What a tremendous feeling it is to know forgiveness and release.  Who among us has not breathed an enormous sigh of relief when a problem, perhaps of our own making, has gone away or has been solved by a third party?  The comfort comes and we are relieved beyond description.  We feel new, cleaner, and better.

It is the way humans are, and the way that we feel painted into a corner from time to time, that we find ourselves in positions that make the repetition of these up-and-down emotions possible and even necessary.  It’s been the subject of many questions, prayers, and publications on how we break the cycle.  Does the question then become how we can simply move forward and not get ourselves into the same pickle again?

My friends, according to Hosea and David, it is love and mercy that are required, not sacrifices or show.  Contrition seems therefore to be more than a realization that is certainly necessary, but going further, a true desire to reform and to change specific patterns of behavior that places us back into that same painted corner.  A wise man once said, “It’s one thing to feel badly, but it’s another thing to do something about it.”

Question of the Day:  How will you become an example of forgiveness and mercy toward others?

Prayer:  “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”
