Saturday of the Thirty-First Week in Ordinary Time

November 7, 2020

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, Media, PA

Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians 4:10-19

Psalm 112:1b-2, 5-6 8a-9

Luke 16:9-15

Today’s Gospel narrative is the continuation of yesterday’s parable in which Jesus commended the dishonest steward, not because of his dishonesty, but because of his shrewdness.  His cleverness allowed him to take effective steps to guarantee his future employment by using his master’s wealth.  That is why in today’s Gospel Jesus exhorts His disciples and all of us to follow in the footsteps of this dishonest steward who used money generously to make friends for himself.  We are asked to use our wealth for our future place in the kingdom of heaven.

Being generous, according to Saint Luke, is to make friends with the poor and needy through the use of our wealth.  All of those we help through our generosity, regardless if we ever meet them face to face, become our friends because we are merciful and generous in their time of need, just as God is merciful to us in our need for His forgiveness and help.  The people we assist will be on our side before God’s judgment seat because we had invested our wealth in them.  Saint Matthew (25:4) reminds us, “As often as you did it to the least of these my brothers and sisters, you did it to me.”

However, Jesus does warn us that it is not acceptable to be dishonest, unjust and not trustworthy.  He reminds us too that it is perfectly fine to earn money but it is not acceptable to earn money dishonestly by cheating, dishonesty, violence and fraud.

Question of the Day:  Do you know the joy and freedom of generosity in giving to others what God has so richly given to you?

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, instill in my heart the blessedness of giving of my time, talent and treasure to those in need?
