Saturday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

September 28, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Memorial Feast of St. Wenceslaus, Martyr (c.911-935)

Zechariah 2:5-9, 15-15a

Psalm (Jer. 31:10. 11-12ab, 13)

Luke 9:43b-45

Today Jesus foretells His fate to His disciples.  But they are confused and afraid to ask for an explanation.  Place yourself into this scene.  You see Jesus as the incredible charismatic leader.  He speaks and you listen.  “Pay attention to what I am telling you.  The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”  Wait, what?  I could imagine my own confusion as someone who did not know the later chapters of Jesus’ story.  I personally would ask questions.  Why didn’t His disciples?  Maybe it was best not to ask Jesus what he meant out of fear of looking ignorant.

When we fast forward to today we think how often we have not spoken or not acted out of a fear of looking foolish.  Experts (psychologists) claim that fear is the primary motivation for everything.  Fear of failure and fear of embarrassment become more personally important that how others perceive us.  In the movie “Defending your Life” fear is referred to as a “giant fog that sits on your brain and blocks everything—real feelings, true happiness, real joy.  When the fog is lifted you are in for the ride of your life.”   May we never be in fear in knowing our beloved Lord, Jesus Christ.

Question of the Day:  Will you “pay attention” to the Words of Jesus?

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I hear and understand you Holy Words.  Grant me the courage to act in Your service as I “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.”
