Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

Saturday, September 21, 2019

 Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13

Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5

Matthew 9:9-13

Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, took the teaching of Saint Paul to heart, whether or not he ever met the man.  He proclaimed the Good News of Jesus.  In the words of the psalm response, his message went out through all the earth.  In doing this, he helped equip his listeners to take the story of Jesus to the known world.  Actually, we do not know much about Matthew’s ministry.  But we do have the legacy of his Gospel.

Matthew was a tax collector for the occupying Roman army and, most certainly, despised by his fellow countrymen.  But our Lord called him and Matthew followed.  Matthew was sick, a sinner, and needed a physician – a Divine Physician.  Jesus had the necessary medicine – MERCY!

We should be glad that Jesus did not listen to the Pharisees who were too pure to reach out to Matthew.  Our Church and the world would be the worse for it.  I am reminded of Matthew every time I meet someone who is obviously not interested in the saving power of Jesus Christ.  I can always tell by the way they speak, the way they act and by the way they live.  Then Saint Matthew comes to mind.  Then I know for sure that we can all be saved.  Just read the Gospel of…Matthew.

Question of the Day:  Do I believe in the saving power of Jesus, the Divine Physician?

Prayer:  God, You chose St. Matthew the Publican to become an Apostle.  By following  his example and benefiting by his prayers may we always follow and abide by Your will.  Amen.  (Taken from Lives of the Saints Illustrated – Catholic Book Publishing Company)
