Jonah 4:1-11
Psalm 86
Luke 11:1-4
I suspect the disciples were impressed with our Lord’s example of taking time to pray in the midst of His hectic schedule. Jesus spent long hours in prayer in the evenings and even through the night. Before every major event in His life He is found in prayer. Today Jesus teaches all of us how to pray.
What does the Lord’s Prayer tell us about God and about ourselves? First, it tells us that God is both Father in being the Creator and Author of all that He has made. Second, Jesus teaches us to address God as “Our Father” and to confidently ask Him for the things we need to live as His sons and daughters.
It has been said that the Lord’s Prayer gives us several guidelines. We see that when we give God His place only then can the other things take their proper places. Not to worry about the unknown future but to live one day at a time. Finally, we are empowered to forgive because we know what it is to be forgiven.
At the end, the Our Father teaches us how to pray. It leads us to where our concerns should lie, not only on some individualistic need or concern, but more so, God’s concerns. It is part of our daily dose of piety, if you will. Do we pray with greater attention, reflecting on the meaning of the words? Do we think about the privilege of calling God, “Father?” Think about it – better yet, pray.
Question of the Day: Do you pray with your mind, your heart and your soul?
Prayer: Lord, deepen in us a desire to pray. Calm our fears and anxieties, and then teach us to pray, so we can come to know you as you are, and let go of expectations of who we thing you ought to be.
