NEW YEAR’S EVE 2019!  I once read that New Year’s Eve was “a special day by all reckonings.”  I suspect that it’s special because it asks us to “look both ways” – that is, to the past year and to the year that lies ahead.  Traditionally, this is a time for New Year’s resolutions (looking ahead) and also a time for reflection on how good God has been to us during the past year.

The Gospel for today begins with the stately words that open with, “In the beginning was the Word…”  With these few words begins the song of praise, a hymn that celebrates the Incarnation of God.  In the exact middle of the “hymn,” we are told, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”  What better way to end our year than by being reminded of the beginning of Christianity.  God so loved us that He sent His only Son, the Word made flesh.  The Incarnation, which we are now celebrating, is just the beginning of our being blessed lavishly by God.

The effects of Christ’s “dwelling among us” becomes manifest in many ways.  We want to be called into gratitude for that blessing in which He is for us by His birth and how He comes into our lives.  He comes into our lives through the Holy Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  He comes into our lives through His Holy Word that we follow on our journey to the Kingdom of God.  How can we not be grateful?  Thank you Lord Jesus for the many blessings of 2019 and we look forward to serving you in 2020.

Question of the Day:  How can I serve Jesus throughout the New Year and every year of my life?

Prayer:  Almighty God and Father, we thank you for the gift of our lives.  In the coming new year we pray for lasting peace and solidarity in our troubled world, the end of violence, the end of abortion, the end of injustice and to bring all people to Your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
