Silencing the Lies
Malvern Minute

January 10, 2018   Wednesday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord. I know them, and they follow me. Alleluia, alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (1:29-39

On leaving the synagogue
Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.
Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.
They immediately told him about her.
He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.
Then the fever left her and she waited on them.

When it was evening, after sunset,
they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.
The whole town was gathered at the door.
He cured many who were sick with various diseases,
and he drove out many demons,
not permitting them to speak because they knew him.

Rising very early before dawn,
he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.

Simon and those who were with him pursued him
and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages
that I may preach there also.
For this purpose have I come.”

So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons
throughout the whole of Galilee.

Reflect: He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. The power of God is in our midst. In addition to curing many sick people, Jesus drove out many demons. He silenced evil. He brought the lies of Satan out into the open and silenced the tongue of the evil one. We might be tempted to listen to the voice of the devil especially when we are tried and pressed by the circumstances of life. We might be attracted to a dead-end solution appearing like a mirage in our passing desert. Our true hope, however, is Jesus Christ. He is perfect Truth. He has defeated sin through his cross, death and resurrection; and he continues to intervene in our lives to bring the lies of the evil-one into light. Trust him. Even in the most trying situation, Jesus is present. He will never give up on us, even if we have made a mess trying to solve our own problems or temporarily falling to the lure of evil-one’s lies. There is only one Savior of the World. There is only one God who made us, sustains us and calls us to the fullness of life. There is only one who speaks the fullness of truth at every moment of every day. Brothers and sisters, we are called to remain strong; even when we are weak, Jesus is our Strength. Let Jesus call the demons to light and silence their corrupted voice. Turn the trials, emptiness, temptation, sinfulness, weakness, big mistakes over to Jesus. He silences the lies and fills our hearts with the consolation of truth, peace, healing and forgiveness. In the light of Jesus, evil has no voice.

Questions: What lies from the evil-one are I tempted to listen to? Do I invite Jesus to call the false promises to light and to silence the nagging voice of evil? Do I trust the genuine power of God promised me through the sacraments and prayer to guide me into the Light of Christ?

Pray: Loving God, my life is in your hands. In you I trust. You alone have the words of everlasting life. Fortify me when I am weak. Give me a heart that seeks you and your ways, for only you speak perfect truth and silence the voice of the enemy.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy God; Holy and Might One; Holy and Immortal One: Have mercy on me and on the whole world.
