Sixth Day within the Octave of the Nativity of the Lord

December 30, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

First Letter of Saint John 2:12-17

Psalm 96

Luke 2:36-40

I received a Christmas card with a picture of a young girl kissing the face of the infant child she was holding.  The writing on the card said, “Kissing the Face of God.”  Just imagine…Mary and Joseph kissing the face of God as they took Him home and live their quiet lives in Nazareth.  “The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon Him.”  (Luke 2:40)

Friends, the mystery of God-made-man is one we humans cannot truly comprehend, but the possibility of that happening can be believed because we know that nothing is impossible for God.

But what can we learn from today’s Gospel about our own lives?  We can reflect that Mary and Joseph were faithful to the Jewish traditions as they understood them.  We can reflect that Mary and Joseph were chosen from the working class of people who were not distracted by riches and power. We can reflect that Jesus grew as a normal human being – just like all of us.

He “grew in wisdom” as we also grow in wisdom.  We are to grow in wisdom and knowledge in order to reach our potential that God has given each of us.  St. Irenaeus said, “The glory of God is man (and woman) fully alive.”  How can we be fully alive with all the frailties we observe in ourselves and in others?  That’s the mystery of our lives.  We need to find our unique gifts throughout our lifetime.  Our goal is to identify our gifts and talents for the benefit of ourselves and others.  After all, nothing is impossible for God.

Question(s) of the Day:  Why was I born?  What am I supposed to do with my life?  How should I serve the world?

Prayer:  Loving God, help us reflect on our own lives and understand the gifts you have given each one of us.  Help us identify those gifts in order to serve others for Your greater honor and glory.
