A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (9:51-56)

When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled,
he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,
and he sent messengers ahead of him.
On the way they entered a Samaritan village
to prepare for his reception there,
but they would not welcome him
because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.

When the disciples James and John saw this they asked,
“Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven
to consume them?”
Jesus turned and rebuked them,
and they journeyed to another village.

Reflect: Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village. Jesus was determined that his mission was to take him to Jerusalem, the summit of his earthly journey. The apostles James and John were angry because Jesus was rejected from receiving hospitality in a Samaritan village precisely because his destination was Jerusalem. Their reaction was “to call down fire from heaven to consume” the people in that village. Jesus would have nothing of it. He rebuked them, and continued his journey to a town that would receive him and his disciples. Like the apostles, we can be quick to react. That reaction can distract us from our purpose. As Jesus was “resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem”, so he reminds us to stay focused on the mission he entrusts to us. Indubitably, we will encounter many distractions along the way. The evil one wants to trip us up even with, what appears to be, justified responses. That is why it is so essential for us to entrust ourselves and our own journey entirely to the divine will of Jesus. If, however, we lose our way, he is the only one who can set us back on course. Jesus alone is our Guiding Light, our North Star, our Hope, our Redeemer!

Questions: What is my destination in life? How do I stay on course? Do I aspire to abandon myself to Jesus and his divine will?

Pray: Loving God, you have magnificently and marvelously made me for a special purpose. Send out your Holy Spirit to enlighten me to understand your will, and to help me to stay on course in my way to you.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Remember your word to your servant, O Lord, by which you have given me hope. This is my comfort when I am brought low.
