A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (5:17-19)

Jesus said to his disciples:
Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.

Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law,
until all things have taken place.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments
and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.
But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”

Reflect: Whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. As Jesus continues his Sermon on the Mount, he reinforces the exhortation for us to be salt and light. We represent our God to the world by living and thriving in his commandments. His commandments are not a list of restrictions, but rather a guide to the way of a full and fulfilling life. We make God known by the way we live. By sincerely molding ourselves to his ways, we conform ourselves to the purpose of our lives, the reason we have life: to love, honor and glorify God. He uses each of us in the unique ways that we are put together, with particular gifts and backgrounds so that his presence can be made known throughout the world. If we desire greatness, we simply need to follow him and represent him with a sincere and authentic heart. That is the heart that can dare to be transparent in bringing God’s flavor and light wherever we go. Be great; be God’s disciple!

Questions: What kind of greatness do I seek? Do I dare to believe that by embracing the ways of Jesus my life will flourish and be fulfilled? Am I making choices today that will teach others, by my example, about the hope and joy found in God’s commandments?

Pray: Loving God, show me the way to you. Give me a heart that desires nothing more than to seek you and to make you known in the world with my life.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my saving strength.
