January 7, 2021

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, Media, PA

Memorial Feast:  Saint Raymond of Penyafort, Priest (1175-+1275) Patron Saint of Canonists

First Letter of Saint John 4:19-5:4

Psalm72:1-2, 14 and 15bc. 17

Luke 4:14-22

In the Gospel narrative of Saint Luke Jesus is back in Nazareth and attends a Sabbath Service.  An official of the synagogue has the ability to invite any willing adult Jewish man to read the Scripture of the day and deliver a homily.  Jesus accepts this invitation as He is about to begin His public life.  Before He begins He presents to the people His program of ministry.  He tells them who He is, the Anointed One, the Christ and the Messiah.  His mission is to fulfill, as it is written in Isaiah, to proclaim the Good News of salvation; to free us from the captivity of sin; to open our eyes and free us from spiritual blindness.  “Praise God!”

Friends, Jesus’ mission is our mission as well.  As His disciples, we are to continue His program of ministry of proclaiming the Good News of salvation, to open the eyes of those who are spiritually blind, to liberate those who are bound to sin and even to contribute to the social and political liberation of the poor or needy, deprived, oppressed and the exploited.

It is also our mission not to give up on loving, and not to give up on our goodness toward others even if the people around us don’t reciprocate what we offer them.  We do for others because we love others.

Question of the Day:  How will you experience the sweetness of God’s Commandment of love this New Year and have faith to conquer the world?

Prayer:  Lord, may we ask for the grace to allow Your love for us to be mirrored through us to all others.  Amen.
