First Letter of Saint John 2:22-28

Psalm 98

John 1:19-28

In today’s Gospel narrative priests and Levites came to John the Baptist and asked him, “Who are you?”  I’m quite certain that this simple question is not asked out of curiosity.  It’s a question asked out of suspicion.  I say this because John the Baptist is a most remarkable individual.  He doesn’t dress like everyone else.  He doesn’t eat like everyone else.  Most certainly he doesn’t speak like everyone else.  He was the son of a priest but has nothing to do with the Temple.  Many people came to him to listen to his words and teachings.

John knew “who he was.”  He knew his identity by showing his humility.  He was a prophet sent by God to herald the coming of the Messiah.  He was a simple messenger who would prepare the way of our Lord, Jesus.

John realized that humility requires sincerity and honesty.  Just like the sincerity and honesty of a small child.  A humble person wins more respect from others than the person who is proud and boastful.  The humble person does not regard his or her possessions or accomplishments as his own but as a gift from God.

May all of us use our good Saint John the Baptist as our model of humility and ultimate sacrifice as we live our lives adhering to the Good News of Christ Jesus.

Question of the Day:  Will you practice the virtue of humility as true and faithful follower of our Lord Jesus?

Prayer: “Who ever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”  Matthew 23:12
